On April 22, 2023, we will be hosting our FIRST annual Paige’s Music Trumpet Day at Butler University. This year, we are partnering with Yamaha to host Joe Burgstaller as our guest artist! Joe was my teacher at Peabody Conservatory and is now the Professor of Trumpet at Arizona State University! He was a member/arranger with the Canadian Brass for many years and is extremely active as an international soloist/clinician. Joe will be presenting a masterclass and a world-class recital at our event!
We are SO excited to host newly appointed Associate Professor of Trumpet at Jacobs School of Music (Indiana University) and President of the International Trumpet Guild, Dr. Jason Bergman for an in-store all instrument clinic DREAM BIG: Tips for Successfully Navigating the Music World. If you love music but aren’t sure what route to go to achieve your dreams, then this is the clinic for you.
As you continue to progress as musicians, you will eventually outgrow the equipment you are using. Even if you feel like you aren’t ready to jump into an upgraded instrument, I highly encourage you to play test a step up or professional level instrument if you get the chance. Play testing a new instrument is a skill on par to sight reading: you might not necessarily do it every day, but the more you do it, the easier it will get!
The first Indianapolis 500-mile Sweepstakes Race was held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 30, 1911. We invite you to celebrate the 111th anniversary of the greatest spectacle in racing with us by racing in for our Month-Of-May sale!
We are excited to announce that Jeff Coffin will be here at Paige’s Music on March 31st. Jeff will be giving a saxophone clinic and we encourage you to bring your instrument for the event! School has been back in session for a few months. And whether you are in-person, virtual, or on a hybrid schedule, it is a great time to talk about the benefits of an upgraded instrument! Manufacturers build student level instruments to be durable and easy to play. This is great for a new player but it can become a detriment as the individual progresses. Some of the benefits that you gain with an upgraded instrument can include: better tone, improved range, new features and even different materials that are used when making it. Another great time about this time of year is that it is rebate season and the most popular one is Step Up to Yamaha! The Step Up to Yamaha rebate promotion provides great consumer offers on some of the finest quality instruments from one of the most recognizable brands in the music industry. This is an opportunity to get a great instrument and receive either a $50 or $100 rebate back from Yamaha. Paige’s Music is one the select few Yamaha Shokunun dealers in Indiana! That means we carry a very wide array of Intermediate, Professional, and Custom level Yamaha Instruments. This includes Xeno and Custom Z Trumpets and
Last time we discussed instruments that would be good for those of us who primarily want to play jazz or commercial types of music and left it by discussing studio musicians who may need to do it all. This leads us nicely into the classical side of trumpet playing and the instruments needed for that work. In order of importance here are my suggestions. (Your timeline may vary. Please consult your teacher/professor on when it is appropriate to purchase these instruments)

Graduation typically means ordering an over-priced cap and gown, long ceremonies with longer speeches, open house celebrations, and more pictures than you may ever want to take. Thankfully musicians can enjoy a more pertinent graduation in the form of the Graduate to Yamaha promotion!
Unveiled at the NAMM show just several weeks ago, the limited edition Yamaha Xeno “Kangakki” has arrived at Paige’s Music. Even more exciting is that there are only 100 of these trumpets available in the United States! Based on the acclaimed YTR-8335IIS Xeno, the Kangakki is truly one-of-a-kind with gold plated accents on the valve caps, valve buttons, black mother-of-pearl finger buttons, and a 16C4 mouthpiece with gold plated rim and cup. Finally, the “Kangakki” bell engraving adds one final touch that symbolizes “the highest quality of instruments for musicians of any level”. Instrument Features: A new bell design contributes to optimum resistance for a powerful tonal core and accurate slotting. The new design also enhances playability in the upper register. Thinner valve casing and pistons, as well as the modified angle of the branch tube (knuckle) result in improved response and provide the performer with an ideal blowing resistance. The button on the 1st slide serves to fine-tune the blowing resistance for optimum control. The height of the main slide water key gutter has been increased for optimum resistance, and the ends of the water key spring have been curled for improved response. Double case with backpack straps.

The YSL-891Z is a professional level jazz trombone that was developed with Wycliffe Gordon and Andy Martin. It features a .508 yellow brass slide with an 8 inch yellow brass bell. The YSL-891Z plays very evenly throughout its range, and it offers adaptability in sound and response with its two interchangeable leadpipes. When compared to similarly sized instruments on the market (e.g. King 3B) the YSL-891Z feels and plays a bit lighter. In addition to being an excellent instrument the YSL-891Z has a sleek, durable, and functional case. When comparing the YSL-891Z to my vintage King 3B the instrument is lighter and more nimble. The YSL-891Z fits nicely in between the sounds of a Bach 16M and a King 3B. To my ear it offers slightly more projection than the Bach, and it feels a bit more agile than a King.

This past Sunday, I was proud to represent Paige’s Music at the 2nd Annual University of Indianapolis Trumpet Day! This event is full of dozens of ready-to-play trumpets for attendees to try, trumpet centered organizations and programs, and features prominent local and international artists. I always enjoy attending events such as this because, as a trumpet player, I get to meet dozens of fellow players and “talk shop” about the intermediate, professional, and custom line trumpets we carry here at our brick-and-mortar location. I encouraged people to try the instruments first-hand to get a true feel of a new instrument, whether they are on the market or just want to try something new for fun.
Next month we are sending two Technicians out to Yamaha’s facility for some specialized “Shokunin” training. In March we are sending a Technician out for certification on installing Straubinger flute pads. And in April we will be sending four of our technicians to the yearly convention of the National Association of Professional Band Instrument Repair Technicians (NAPBIRT) to attend multiple seminars and training sessions. We aren’t required to do this. We choose to regularly send our technicians out to training seminars throughout the year to keep up on the latest and greatest techniques, tools and new materials that may well improve the services we provide on maintaining your instruments. We constantly better ourselves and our methods to pass them on to you, our customers, for a better, more comprehensive repair. We believe that this approach aligns with our vision as a company; Our vision is for every student to reach his or her potential through the positive, life-changing power of making music. We believe in that vision so strongly that we devote all of our energy, passion and resources to serving and strengthening music education across Indiana. If we rest on our laurels and depend on “the way we’ve always
