We’re approaching the time of year where temperatures are averaging above 75 degrees Fahrenheit with high humidity levels in Indiana. We all know that cold winters present it’s own challenges, but the summer heat can create just as many issues. Wood is an organic material that will always react to the temperature, which is why we have to be careful about where the instrument is being stored. We have seen fingerboards come unglued, necks pop out of place, and varnish essentially melt. With the high levels of humidity and scorching temperatures that we endure in Indiana, you want to be careful with how you store your instrument and where it is being stored. Ignoring those bell dents? Send your instrument in for repair. Sticky flute pads? Send your instrument in for repair. Is your instrument dirty? Send it in for cleaning. If you have a rental instrument, all repair and maintenance is already covered and you should make use of your included coverage whenever an issue of any sort arises. Sending in your instrument during summer break means you are less likely to miss any valuable rehearsal or class time. Should I return my rental instrument? You should keep your rental instrument over the summer if your student is going to continue in band or orchestra next school year. Your student will be able to practice and be ready to play once the new school year begins. Your student should make an effort to pick up and play their instrument every day and play it even if it’s just for a few minutes. This will keep them engaged ready to go and make it easy to return to class and rehearsal without having to worry about re-learning their instrument. You should only return your rental instrument if you are absolutely certain your student will not continue in their band and orchestra class next

Get Your Instrument Serviced Over The Summer

Has it been a while since your instrument was in for a check-up? If summer is a down time for you and your playing time, then you should send your instrument in for a check-up. We recommend two visits each year to help keep your instrument in proper playing condition and the summer is the perfect time. In fact, schools across the state will be sending in all kinds of school-owned instruments this summer to be cleaned, repaired, and refurbished so that they are ready to go for the next school year. The best way to get your horn serviced during the summer is to bring it to the store. Our District Managers are visiting some schools during the summer, but not all schools and not every week. It’s very sporadic. The safe thing to do is call us first to see if arrangements can be made to drop off a loaner and pick up your instrument. You can call us at 1-800-337-0471.
