3rd Annual Tuba & Euphonium Day Recap

It’s been almost a month, and I am still basking in the afterglow of the Third Annual Tuba & Euphonium Day that took place here at Paige’s Music on April 27. To call the event a success would be selling short my feelings about it, so let’s just give it a quick recap. This year saw the largest assortment of tubas and euphoniums the store has ever seen at one time – from Yamaha, Shires, Willson, and Eastman, many instruments were brought in specifically for people to try out at Tuba & Euphonium Day (huge thanks to Eastman Music Company for coordinating so many different horns). We welcomed Scott Sutherland to the store as our guest artist for this year’s event. From the very beginning, Scott showed just how incredible a musician and all-around human being he is, working with players of all ages to demo instruments all day with knowledge, friendliness, personal attention, and most of all a genuine enthusiasm that never waned. The day culminated in Scott giving a clinic on incorporating technology into a musician’s daily routine – whether it’s in the practice room, onstage, or in a DIY recording studio. He accompanied this with a live

The Euphonium vs. Baritone: Unraveling the Musical Mystery

Explore the nuanced differences between the euphonium and baritone, a question that stirs curiosity among musicians and enthusiasts alike. “Oh, you’re a musician? What instrument do you play?” It’s a simple enough question. And it’s one that, for 99.9 percent of musicians, has a simple answer. Unfortunately, we euphonium players make up a fair portion of that .1 percent. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said to someone, “I play the euphonium,” only to be met with a confused pause, followed by the inevitable, “What’s that?” My response to that response is almost always one of two: either “it’s like a baby tuba,” (usually gets a chuckle) or “…the baritone?” Aha! The recognition I see in the other person’s eyes tells me I’ve cracked the code for them. They know what a baritone is. Maybe they played it in middle school? Or knew someone who did? Or their child does? Or did? Whatever the case, these interactions touch on an all-too-common question, even within the band world: “What is the difference between a baritone and a euphonium?” Are they the same instrument? Is one a bigger version of the other? Does one have more valves? Or even more

Meet Tucker Woerner – Low Brass Specialist at Paige’s Music

My name is Tucker Woerner, and I am the new Low Brass Specialist at Paige’s Music. I have worked at Paige’s for about a year and a half, but I was a Paige’s customer since I started playing the trombone at Eastwood MS in 6th grade. While attending North Central HS I was encouraged by my orchestra director, Craig Ghormley, to consider pursuing music as a career. Along with his help and the guidance of my private teacher, Carl Hungerford, I successfully entered the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Side-by-Side program. While in the Side-by-Side program I met Jared Rodin, and I went on to study with him at Butler University. After completing my BA in Music in 2015 I went to the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University and completed my MM in Trombone Performance with an outside area in Historical Performance. My primary teachers have been M. Dee Stewart, Jared Rodin, Linda Pearse, and Carl Hungerford. In addition to working at Paige’s Music I teach private music lessons and play my horns as much as my schedule permits. I’m always interested to hear what music you enjoy and why. As the old adage goes, “there are only two kinds
