3rd Annual Tuba & Euphonium Day Recap

It’s been almost a month, and I am still basking in the afterglow of the Third Annual Tuba & Euphonium Day that took place here at Paige’s Music on April 27. To call the event a success would be selling short my feelings about it, so let’s just give it a quick recap. This year saw the largest assortment of tubas and euphoniums the store has ever seen at one time – from Yamaha, Shires, Willson, and Eastman, many instruments were brought in specifically for people to try out at Tuba & Euphonium Day (huge thanks to Eastman Music Company for coordinating so many different horns). We welcomed Scott Sutherland to the store as our guest artist for this year’s event. From the very beginning, Scott showed just how incredible a musician and all-around human being he is, working with players of all ages to demo instruments all day with knowledge, friendliness, personal attention, and most of all a genuine enthusiasm that never waned. The day culminated in Scott giving a clinic on incorporating technology into a musician’s daily routine – whether it’s in the practice room, onstage, or in a DIY recording studio. He accompanied this with a live

How “Fallout” Broadened My Musical Horizons

Video games and music are two passions that hold a special place in my heart. My bandmates, who became lifelong friends, were also my gaming buddies. We spent countless days playing a robust lineup of Halo, Smash Bros., and Mario Kart—back in its prime. Amidst our competitive bouts, I couldn’t help but savor the soundtracks echoing from the speakers. The iconic Halo Opening Suite is as monumental to me as the first time I experienced Mahler’s Symphony No. 5.

Pop Goes Classical: Why the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s “Uncharted Series” Just Works

Pessimists will argue that classical music is dead because it is inaccessible, too expensive, or worst of all, boring. Those same people would say that pop music has no value because it lacks complexity, is overproduced and – wouldn’t you guess it – also boring. But what if it didn’t have to be that way? What if we didn’t have to choose between Beethoven or Beyoncé, Brahms or Radiohead, Stravinsky or Kendrick Lamar? Well, thanks to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s Uncharted Series, you don’t have to choose between classical, pop, rap, or rock. You can have it all!

Tommy Dorsey

Tommy Dorsey November 19, 1905 – November 26, 1956 Throughout his 35 years career as a professional trombonist and bandleader, Tommy Dorsey established himself as one of the most popular musicians of his era. It’s often forgotten that the musicians we study now were the elite popular musicians of their time. During the 1930s and 1940s Dorsey had 286 Billboard chart hits, including 17 number one singles.  In addition to his commercial success, Dorsey’s signature style has been adopted by generations of musicians. His slide vibrato, phrasing, and fluidity have inspired countless trombonists, and Frank Sinatra cited Dorsey as one of his primary influences. Sinatra was a member of the Tommy Dorsey orchestra from 1940-1942, and he can be heard on 80 records with the band. In the classical realm, Dorsey’s playing has been attributed as one of the primary inspirations for Henri Tomasi’s “Concerto for Trombone.” For more information about Dorsey please visit https://www.allmusic.com/artist/tommy-dorsey-mn0000934072/biography https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qmb_ae35QWU
