The Jazz of Physics and the Physics of Jazz

Music has a mysterious power. In his TedTalk, Stephon Alexander explores the parallel between jazz music and the functioning of our universe. Stephon’s journey in becoming a physicist started in high school when he encountered a teacher who believed in his potential and introduced him to the magic of jazz while fostering a connection between John Coltrane and Albert Einstein. The narrative  takes us to the present day with the world of physics attempting to understand the origin of the universe, which may in fact have its own parallel to a jazz improvisation. In closing, Stephon challenges us to live a life of improvisation.  Stephon Alexander is the EE Just Professor at Dartmouth College of Natural Sciences, Physics and Astronomy, focusing on theoretical cosmology, quantum gravity and particle physics, and a National Geographic Emerging Explorer. Stephon studied at Brown University and conducted postodoctoral research at Imperial College, London and at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Laboratory. He also plays jazz saxophone and sees improvisation as an extension of his scholarship. Stephon is the current President of the National Society of Black Physicists. Interested in more of Dr. Alexander’s work? He recently appeared on The Portal podcast discussing jazz, theoretical physics, politics,

When to Buy Which Trumpet? Jazz/Commercial Edition

I’ve got some news for everyone: I am a trumpet junkie. I have always been fascinated by different brands and models and have even experienced many cases of FOMO (fear of missing out) when it comes to my equipment. I’ve taught several students and have had to have this conversation many times and have even asked for personal recommendations. Today is just a quick look at what instruments you should purchase and when, depending upon your musical path. While it is super difficult to give a recommendation without hearing people play or know what their interests are, I will give some fairly general model recommendations from the “Big Three” brands of trumpets along with a few special suggestions when needed. Today we will discuss instruments needed for those who want to primarily be Jazz/Commercial players and they will be in order of importance. (Your timeline may vary. Please consult your teacher/professor on when it is appropriate to purchase these instruments)

Tommy Dorsey

Tommy Dorsey November 19, 1905 – November 26, 1956 Throughout his 35 years career as a professional trombonist and bandleader, Tommy Dorsey established himself as one of the most popular musicians of his era. It’s often forgotten that the musicians we study now were the elite popular musicians of their time. During the 1930s and 1940s Dorsey had 286 Billboard chart hits, including 17 number one singles.  In addition to his commercial success, Dorsey’s signature style has been adopted by generations of musicians. His slide vibrato, phrasing, and fluidity have inspired countless trombonists, and Frank Sinatra cited Dorsey as one of his primary influences. Sinatra was a member of the Tommy Dorsey orchestra from 1940-1942, and he can be heard on 80 records with the band. In the classical realm, Dorsey’s playing has been attributed as one of the primary inspirations for Henri Tomasi’s “Concerto for Trombone.” For more information about Dorsey please visit https://www.allmusic.com/artist/tommy-dorsey-mn0000934072/biography https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qmb_ae35QWU

From solo performance to lead in a big-band, this extraordinary instrument delivers brilliant tone and great power with a solid tonal core for all types of commercial trumpet playing with particular improvement of support for upper-register playing. Product Feature: Yamaha YSL-891Z Jazz Trombone

The YSL-891Z is a professional level jazz trombone that was developed with Wycliffe Gordon and Andy Martin. It features a .508 yellow brass slide with an 8 inch yellow brass bell. The YSL-891Z plays very evenly throughout its range, and it offers adaptability in sound and response with its two interchangeable leadpipes. When compared to similarly sized instruments on the market (e.g. King 3B) the YSL-891Z feels and plays a bit lighter. In addition to being an excellent instrument the YSL-891Z has a sleek, durable, and functional case. When comparing the YSL-891Z to my vintage King 3B the instrument is lighter and more nimble. The YSL-891Z fits nicely in between the sounds of a Bach 16M and a King 3B. To my ear it offers slightly more projection than the Bach, and it feels a bit more agile than a King.
