William Bennett Meet & Greet

Ahead of his masterclass at Butler University, the Indy Flute Shop is honored to host a meet-and-greet with legendary flutist William Bennett! We are so lucky to be able to host Bennett in Indianapolis again, as he shares his incomparable teaching style, knowledge, and wit with students at Butler University under the tutelage of Karen Moratz. The masterclass will be held at Eidson-Duckwall Recital Hall from 7-10pm, and at 4:30 there will be a FREE meet-and-greet right here in the Indy Flute Shop! One of the foremost musical artists performing today, Bennett has raised the profile of the flute to that of an instrument capable of a wide range of tonal colors, dynamics, and expression. He studied in London with Geoffrey Gilbert, and in France with Jean-Pierre Rampal and Marcel Moyse. In addition to recording the standard flute repertoire of Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Mozart, and so on, he has made pioneer recordings of many neglected 19th century works, such as music by Ries, Romberg, and Taffanel. He has recorded with artists such as Jimi Hendrix and Wynton Marsalis. He has made over 100 CD’s as a soloist. He has been principal flute in many orchestras including the London Symphony, the

Fluterscooter recap

Wow, what an amazing past week it has been! I’m sure that all of you saw the big news about Fluterscooter coming to visit, and we were lucky enough to have Karen Moratz, principal flute of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, be able to secure the use of an organ at North United Methodist Church for her to showcase her unique talent of playing flute and organ at the same time! It was such an amazing experience to see live and in person, and the live stream has now been viewed more than 1,000 times! If you didn’t get a chance to see it live, check it out on our Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/indyfluteshop/ One of the most fascinating parts of what Fluterscooter had to say at her in-store clinic is that she has always tried to forge her own path, rather than do what everyone else has been doing. She started out thinking she wanted to be an orchestral performer but quickly realized that that particular path wasn’t for her, so she immediately started thinking of ways that she could explore new musical territories, whether it be through learning unique world flute instruments, selling ice cream, or being the first

A Fluterscooter special: Flute and organ simultaneously!

With only 2 days to go until An Evening with Fluterscooter, we just received word of some BIG news: at 3pm at North United Methodist Church (38th and Meridian), Fluterscooter will be giving a very special performance of her very own flute and organ duo! A million thanks to Karen Moratz for helping to make this possible! Hear from Fluterscooter herself on this unique talent: At this year’s Iowa Flute Festival, I took on a challenge given to me by flute professor and festival chair Nicole Esposito, to play flute and organ simultaneously! This is something I had tried many years ago at Flutes by the Sea, but I never had the chance to perform it. Since the University of Iowa had just gotten an amazing new organ in their new recital hall, this was the perfect opportunity for me to present this unique feat (pun intended). We even commissioned composer Joseph Hallman to write a piece specifically for this combination of flute and organ pedals, premiering at the concert. I also performed J.S. Bach’s e minor Sonata with the continuo part played on my feet. I am not an organist nor would I ever call myself one. I am

Presenting An Evening With Fluterscooter!

I am so excited for the Indy Flute Shop’s upcoming event, coming Thursday, December 7th: An Evening With Fluterscooter! The subject of Entrepreneurship is a hot topic in the arts, and Andrea “Fluterscooter” Fisher has been a sought after speaker at universities and conservatories including The Juilliard School, New York University, Penn State University, and University of Iowa, to name a few. She was active in the inception of The Juilliard School’s recent Entrepreneurship program as one of the first Resident Entrepreneurs. Andrea has been giving lectures, workshops, and private coachings to students and graduates of all arts disciplines for the past 4 years. A graduate of The Juilliard School in flute performance (BM 02, MM 04), Andrea started the popular and fashionable Fluterscooter flute bag brand 6 years ago, and has grown the business to be sold in over 100 stores worldwide. Fluterscooter has thus expanded to include oboe and clarinet bags as well as partnering with Powell Flutes as a manufacturer for their bags. She is also co-founder and editor of The Flute View magazine and has self-released 3 albums. A performer in her own right, Andrea creates and produces all of her events, and was the first

George Pope clinic

Wow, what a week it has been! A heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who came out to our Grand Opening event last Thursday with George Pope. I hope you all got as much out of it as I did. It was so good to see him interact with everyone at such a high level, and he had so much valuable information! Pope began the clinic with a session on stretching and breathing, which as you all know is very near and dear to my heart! I was just visiting some middle schools last week to talk all things flute, and I always take a few minutes to show the flute players some easy stretches that they can do anytime, particularly after sitting in a cramped desk for so long. You can always hear the sighs of relief after those brief exercises! Pope talked about the less-than-ideal playing position of the flute, how important it is to bring the instrument to you (as opposed to craning your neck or adjusting the body to the instrument, which often causes discomfort), and breathing everywhere from the bottom of your ribs all the way up into the collarbones. Did you know that you have

Of course, the best and most important one is happening first, and guess what: there’s still time to get tickets! Please use the link below to secure your free ticket: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/george-pope-flute-clinic-hosted-by-indy-flute-shop-tickets-38942723735?aff=efbeventtix I wanted to share the other exciting events that are going on here at Paige’s for the next month as we celebrate the completion of our new showrooms that were unveiled back in June. This new space (in the same building as before) really showcases our success as a company and our dedication to school and professional musicians in the state of Indiana. On Monday, November 13th, famed string quintet SYBARITE 5 will present a concert at Paige’s. “Their rock star status…is well deserved. Their classically honed technique mixed with grit and all out passionate attack transfixes the audience…” That is how the Sarasota Herald Tribune described SYBARITE5, the first string quintet ever to win the Concert Artists Guild International Competition. Comprised of Sami Merdinian and Sarah Whitney, violins; Angela Pickett, viola; Laura Metcalf, cello; and Louis Levitt, bass, SYBARITE5 has taken audiences by storm all across the

NFA 2017 recap

Well just like that, another National Flute Association convention is in the books! This year’s convention was in Minneapolis, which is a first for me. As always, there were so many incredible recitals, learning opportunities, and chances to visit with vendors. Unfortunately I was not able to stay for the entire duration of the convention, so I squeezed in as much as I could on Thursday and Friday! A theme that I have noticed since I started attending NFA conventions in 2014 is that flutists are really starting to pay attention to their bodies and how playing affects their posture and overall health. If you have been following this blog for a while, you have read my posts about my own struggles with tendonitis and fibromyalgia, which presents itself mostly in my upper back and shoulders. Several sessions I attended dealt with warming up both the body and mind in preparation for playing, and I also attended a booth where my posture and playing position was analyzed using the concept of body mapping. So fascinating! Watch for more in-depth updates on that soon. One of the most fascinating workshops I attended went in-depth–literally!!–to the head and neck and what happens

Sandra Graef Memorial Competition results

Continuing on a beautiful tradition, the 2017 Sandra Graef Memorial middle school flute competition was an amazing success! Following a preliminary round on Saturday morning, 6 talented flutists advanced to the finals, and 3 of them walked away with some fabulous prizes. The Indy Flute Shop is honored to contribute to these awards. Sandra was a prolific educator and performer in the Indianapolis area. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Ithaca College in 1989 and a Master’s degree in flute performance at Butler University in 2006. She was the Music Department Chair and Director of Bands for the 7th and 8th grades at Zionsville Middle School, and she was a member of the Anderson and Lafayette Symphony Orchestras and also performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, and the Russian Festival Orchestra. After her death in 2008 after a long battle with breast cancer, this memorial competition was set up in her name to honor middle school flute players who have achieved a high level of performance. This competition is so valuable because it is often the first experience that middle school flute players have outside of ISSMA Solo and Ensemble contest to perform for their

He has been principal flute in many orchestras including the London Symphony, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, and the English Chamber Orchestra. He appears frequently as a soloist and recording artist, having recorded over 100 albums to date. ISU Flute Fest!

This Saturday, I will be exhibiting at Indiana State University’s Flute Fest! Sponsored by Miyazawa, a favorite here in the shop, this event promises to be a great amalgamation of fine instruments, a recital, and so much more. Steps to Mastery: The Masterclass

Have you ever participated in a masterclass before? Or does the idea leave you trembling in your boots? The idea can certainly be intimidating, particularly if you have never seen a well-executed masterclass yourself. They can be incredibly powerful, though, and both performer and audience usually walk away with an immense amount of new knowledge. A master class is a concentrated public coaching for the musicians who participate. That is the intimidating part to most people–it’s one thing to receive constructive criticism behind closed doors in a private lesson, but quite another in front of an audience! You’ll definitely benefit from playing in master classes if you’re the kind of person who performs well under pressure. Because each turn is much shorter than an actual lesson or coaching and because the master must explain everything to an audience that may know little about their instrument, they’ll focus on only one or two very specific aspects of each performance. That way, everyone learns: the performer receives a valuable nugget of information that they can later apply to the rest of their repertoire, and the audience experiences how the master’s advice improved their performance. There’s incredible leverage and support created by the

NFA recap!

Wow, what a whirlwind week it’s been! I attended the annual National Flute Association convention in San Diego last Wednesday through Sunday–I am so thankful to have these opportunities! Conventions are always a great time to meet face-to-face with the vendors who provide me with the awesome instruments that I get to sell–most of the time I just interact with them through email and the occasional phone call. I also get to see world-class performances and attend meetings and workshops that leave me feeling invigorated and excited for things to come! Project Trio, naturally, was one of the highlights for me. The infectious energy that these guys exude is so amazing, and I got to be a part of a teacher workshop where they shared some of their techniques for working with students of all ages. One of my favorite parts of this job here at the flute shop is that even though I’m not working directly in a school, I still get to be a teacher! I also got to see fantastic performances by the San Diego Symphony flute section and several other fantastic musicians. So now it’s your turn…what new, up-and-coming things do you want to here here
