What I’ll be checking out at NFA

Greetings! In just one short day, I’ll be heading up to Chicago for the National Flute Association’s 50th annual convention! I haven’t attended convention since 2018, and it’s always such a great opportunity to catch up with my vendors and customers, try new instruments, and renew my passion for what I do. Here’s a sampling of what I’ll be checking out this week. Arnold Jacobs’ Breathing TechniquesChicago Symphony Orchestra tuba player Arnold Jacobs was legendary for his teaching relating to breathing and air use: Song and Wind. In this workshop, Angeleita Floyd, Kimberlee Goodman, and Alexa Still will introduce Jacobs’ ideas, cover the basics of anatomy and pulmonary function, detail the materials for DIY breathing bags (provided for the first 30 participants), instruct how to assemble the breathing bag, and share first-hand experiences with Jacobs and the exercises he taught.I work with tons of younger students who don’t have a true grasp of the importance of the breath in flute playing, and I’ve been known to tell kids that it takes just as much air to play the flute as it does the tuba (I’m not sure they believe me!), so this will be some great concrete information to bring

A Virtual Evening with Karen Moratz

I am so excited to announce the very first Indy Flute Shop virtual event, featuring none other than Indianapolis’ finest, Karen Evans Moratz! I have so missed hosting artists and events here at the shop, but unfortunately it looks like it’s going to be a while before we will be able to safely do that again, so along with the rest of the music industry we are making the best of the situation! I can’t think of a better, more talented, or kinder person to collaborate on this event with, and I really think you are going to enjoy what we are putting together for you. Please join the Indy Flute Shop for a very special virtual event with Karen Evans Moratz– Indianapolis performer, author, entrepreneur, and Win-D-Fender representative. The Win-D-Fender sound guard was originally invented to help flutists play outside without the fear of wind silencing the sound. However, in the past few months it has gained notoriety as a tool to help combat the spread of air when playing related to COVID-19. Karen will give a brief talk on the Win-D-Fender and answer questions about the product. She will then perform a short recital of unaccompanied pieces. Read

NFA convention FOMO

The National Flute Association annual convention, held in beautiful Salt Lake City this year, starts on Thursday, and unfortunately I will not be attending this year. My daughter was born in April and I have just returned to work, so making the trip just wasn’t in the cards this year. I’ve been having some serious FOMO (fear of missing out, for those of you not up on the lingo) looking at the convention schedule this year, but thankfully as a member of NFA I will have access to documents and presentations after the convention is over. Here are some of the sessions and performances that I look forward to gleaning information from next week: Wonder Women: Celebrating Our Strength Through Music Chamber Performance Come hear music emphasizing the beauty and power of women’s voices, celebrating the works of female composers. Performed by flutists Cristina Ballatori, Erika Boysen, Brook Ferguson, Mindy Kaufmann, Virginia Broffitt Kunzer, Naomi Seidman, Naomi Senzer, Lindsay Leach-Sparks, Kelly Sulick, and Audra Ziegel. —because who doesn’t need some girl power in their lives? Transforming Artistry: The Legacy of Joachim Andersen Lecture-Recital Follow the trail of Joachim Andersen through St. Petersburg, Berlin, Scheveningen, and Copenhagen. Kyle Dzapo presents her

Improvisation inspiration

Last night I attended a wonderful clinic featuring Wycliffe Gordon, acclaimed trombonist, here at Paige’s Music. It was sponsored by the wonderful folks at Yamaha and put on by our own Tucker Woerner, low brass specialist. Gordon had so many interesting and insightful things to share with the group, and even though I am FAR from being a trombone player, I was inspired to think about something that we as flute players may tend to shy away from: improvisation. Unfortunately, my musical upbringing involved little to no jazz education, and although I am quite good at sightreading (both vocally and on my flute), I freeze up when I am asked to improvise something or play something that is not in ink on the page. It’s not that I don’t understand the concept of it; maybe I just worry about playing the “right” thing or sounding silly. I know that I am not the only one in this boat; flutist Jim Walker writes, “In the Baroque era (1600-1750) music notation assumed that players would add improvisations and ornamentation to the written music. “Figured Bass” is the term used for the numeric code that composers placed above notes in the piano or

Spotlight: Dolce Suono Ensemble

Those of you who have been following my blog for any length of time know that one of my absolute favorite performers these days is Mimi Stillman–and it certainly helps that she is so unbelievably kind and gracious. We were lucky enough to host her at the shop back in 2014, and she blew everyone away with her effortless poise and technique. These days, she is keeping busy, both with her solo performances as well as her chamber group, Dolce Suono Ensemble. Dolce Suono Ensemble has been dazzling audiences and invigorating the music world since its founding by flutist and Artistic Director Mimi Stillman in 2005. The ensemble presents critically acclaimed chamber music concerts on its home series in Philadelphia, performs on tour, commissions important new works, makes recordings, and engages in community engagement partnerships. Dolce Suono Ensemble was Chamber Music America’s featured American Ensemble and has been highly praised by The New York Times as an “adventurous ensemble.” The Ensemble presents dynamic and innovative programming of repertoire that spans Baroque to new music, and their programs are built organically on culturally relevant themes, such as their recent Celebration of the 150th Anniversary of Claude Debussy (1862-1918) and Samuel Barber

NFA convention plans

It’s finally here! Wednesday morning (VERY early…zzz…) I board a plane for Orlando for the National Flute Asssociation 2018 convention! There are so many things I love about being able to attend this convention every year, and I always come back feeling so rejuvenated and excited about the work that I do here! Here are some of the sessions that I am most excited about. Continuing with the growing trend of awareness about the music/body connection, there are SO many presentations, warm-ups, and lectures associated with health and fitness for flute players. It has been so interesting to see this issue evolve in awareness throughout the years, especially with my own experiences with fibromyalgia and poor playing position. I will be attending these sessions related to player health and look forward to sharing my knowledge with you! Thursday 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. Breath, Body, Flute: Techniques for a Free, Flexible, and Supported Sound In this interactive workshop, Abigail Sperling and physical therapist Edie Sperling will detail breathing and alignment while playing. Bring your flute. Exhibitor Showcase: Music Minus Pain – Taming Upper Body Tension Limited Breathing? Sore neck and back? Hand or wrist problems? If upper body tension or pain

The genre-defying Trio is acclaimed by the press as “packed with musicianship, joy and surprise” and “exciting a new generation of listeners about the joys of classical and jazz music.” Gramophone Magazine singled out the group as “an ensemble willing and able to touch on the gamut of musical bases ranging from Baroque to nu-Metal and taking in pretty much every stylism in between,” while The Wall Street Journal hailed the Trio for their “wide appeal, subversive humor and first-rate playing.” The New York Times has called beatboxing flutist Greg Pattillo “the best in the world at what he does.” PROJECT Trio was featured on NPR’s Morning Edition and NPR Music’s series, Heavy Rotation, where hosts around the country share a favorite new song.
