Back to school special

I can hardly believe I’m typing this, but it’s time for a bunch of local schools to start thinking about heading back for the upcoming semester! Whether you’re totally jazzed or have the end of summer scaries, we have a great deal for you if you’ve been thinking about upgrading to an intermediate or professional model instrument: a free flute or piccolo stand! The Indy Flute Shop has 4 options available for this special offer, all by K&M: your choice of a flute or piccolo stand, with either a 4-leg compact base or a larger base with 3 legs. I personally use the 4 leg compact flute stand because the legs fold up and store inside itself, making it super compact to throw in my purse or better yet, Fluterscooter bag! You can receive one of these free stands with an eligible upgrade of a flute or piccolo from the Indy Flute Shop–just click here to make an appointment to come test some out! See you soon!

Re-introducing myself

Hey there! In the spirit of getting back to more regular posting on here and social media, I thought it would be appropriate to introduce myself to any new followers and re-acquaint myself with others. My name is Erin, and I manage the Indy Flute Shop at Paige’s Music, which was opened in 2008 to better serve the needs of intermediate to professional flute players in Indiana. I’ve been here since March 2013, after finishing my Masters in Music Education at Butler University, where I studied with Karen Moratz. Although this isn’t a traditional teaching job per se, I still get to work with students of all levels to help them choose their next perfect instrument, so it truly is a perfect fit for me. My undergraduate degree is actually in Psychology from the University of Evansville, so I consider myself pretty well-rounded and can psychoanalyze you while you shop for a flute (kidding, kidding). In all seriousness, I really do love what I do, and I always hope that comes across when I’m working with anyone from an excited beginner to a professional player. I’m married to my high school sweetheart, Colin–we’re celebrating 20 years of togetherness this summer!

Paige’s Music History Spotlight-Episode 1

We’re here with the first “Paige’s of History Spotlight”, celebrating the 150th Anniversary of Paige’s Music. Join us as we look back at the events that shaped our country, our state, and our company. For this video series, we’ll be looking at snippets of local and national history as they relate to music education, music industry and our company. So…it’s 1871…The great Chicago Fire rages through the city for two days straight.A breathtaking 3,500 square foot Mile parcel of land was on its way to becoming Yellowstone National Park, and in the industrial city of Terre Haute, Indiana, William Harlan Paige, founded W.H. Paige and Company on the corner of Main and 6th Street with his business partner, W.B. Wharton. The downtown Terre Haute store was a full-line shop for everything related to music. W.H. Paige was known for his fine tenor voice and sold his own choral arrangements at the store as well. Some might argue that W.H. Paige’s success is due to William’s experience of being THE first music teacher in the Terre Haute Public Schools, giving him first hand knowledge of what schools would need for years to come. Just nine years after the opening of the

Re-introducing myself

It’s been a while since I’ve said “hey” around here, and I know I have a lot of new followers since this video came out, so I wanted to take a moment to re-“introduce” myself. Hi! My name is Erin Nichols, and I’m the manager of the Indy Flute Shop at Paige’s Music. I work with everyone from new players to students looking to upgrade their beginner flute from Paige’s Music to local and area professionals to help them find their next perfect forever instrument! I genuinely love what I do, even though I never saw myself in this kind of position. Other random things about me: I’m an I/ENFJ (who else loves Meyers-Briggs??), I have 3 senior pets (a 13-year old beagle, a 9-year old miniature pinscher mix, and a 12-year old red tabby cat), and I LOVE to read. I live in a historic neighborhood in Indianapolis with my husband of 13 years, Colin, and my almost-2 year old daughter, Ailey. If you want to know a little bit about me and my background, feel free to watch this video from about 3 years ago. Enjoy!

Year end thoughts

In the spirit of closing out 2020 on a good note, I just wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude for the support of my customers and colleagues this year. If you have purchased an instrument, attended a virtual clinic, or even liked and shared a post–thank you, from the bottom of my heart. We are a small business, and although we are lucky to be able to keep our doors open, we have certainly felt the effects that 2020 has dealt us just like any other small business. Being able to help guide flute players into their next amazing instrument is what I truly love to do, and I truly appreciate the trust you put in me to help with such a big decision. I know that this year has caused many of us to need to tighten our pockets a bit more, and I do not take it lightly that you choose to support us during this time. I will be out of the office this week, but the shop and Paige’s Music will be open for business through 2pm on New Year’s Eve. We are closed on New Year’s Day and will resume normal business

Maximizing your flute trial time

As we all adjust to life in the midst of a global pandemic, there are understandably extra steps we need to take to ensure the health and safety of both us and you. We welcome you or your student to come try instruments at the shop, but we want to make sure your time is best utilized so you can find your perfect instrument safely. With that in mind, I wanted to re-post some tips and suggestions for what to bring with you when you come to the Indy Flute Shop. FAQ: What should I bring to try a new instrument? | Indy Flute Shop – Indianapolis, Indiana In order to make sure we are setting you or your student up with the perfect flute, it’s really important to make sure that you are getting an idea of how the instrument plays and responds to your unique ability and playing style. The best way to do this is to bring some music, either that you are working on currently, or a piece or two that you are comfortable with. Scale exercises or etude books are always a good idea too, if you have them. We do have some music collections

Getting started this year

Let’s get right to it–there is a LOT of uncertainty right now in regards to what the start of this school year is going to look like. If you have a student who is starting an instrumental music program this year, this uncertainty is even greater–what is their beginning program going to look like? Will they be able to learn a new instrument with virtual instruction? What should I do about getting their instrument? I’m going to tackle these questions and more. And while this blog is dedicated to flute players, please know that this advice can be used for any beginning band or orchestra student. First and foremost, the biggest piece of advice I can give you is the following: if your student expressed interest in beginning band last spring, move forward with that plan. If you haven’t signed up to rent an instrument from Paige’s Music, go ahead and do so online. You can choose to pick up the instrument in our store, using our contact-free curbside service, or have the instrument delivered to your child’s school. As of today, we still have a scheduled date and time to deliver instruments to beginning school music programs; the date

Updates and resources

Let’s address the elephant in the room–these are some crazy times we’re going through right now. The situation is changing hourly, but the effects are already deeply felt by everyone in the music community, all over the country. Being a part of the music business feels like such a small world, and I know so many of you are suffering from cancelled performances, lost revenue, and other hardships. I see you. I feel you. I’ve struggled to decide what to write on my weekly update here, so I’m going to do my best just to provide you with some helpful information. First of all, we are still open for the time being. Again, so many new developments are happening at a very fast pace, so we are monitoring the situation and making smart decisions, which right now includes lots of hand washing, cleaning instruments, and keeping a safe distance from customers. If you do desire to play test instruments at this point, we will ask you to wash your hands beforehand. All flutes will be wiped with alcohol swabs beforehand and swabbed out thoroughly afterwards. Instrument exchanges, purchases, and upgrades can still be made in store for the time being.
