William Bennett Meet & Greet

Ahead of his masterclass at Butler University, the Indy Flute Shop is honored to host a meet-and-greet with legendary flutist William Bennett! We are so lucky to be able to host Bennett in Indianapolis again, as he shares his incomparable teaching style, knowledge, and wit with students at Butler University under the tutelage of Karen Moratz. Fluterscooter recap

Wow, what an amazing past week it has been! I’m sure that all of you saw the big news about Fluterscooter coming to visit, and we were lucky enough to have Karen Moratz, principal flute of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, be able to secure the use of an organ at North United Methodist Church for her to showcase her unique talent of playing flute and organ at the same time! It was such an amazing experience to see live and in person, and the live stream has now been viewed more than 1,000 times! If you didn’t get a chance to see it live, check it out on our Facebook page here: https://www.facebook.com/indyfluteshop/ One of the most fascinating parts of what Fluterscooter had to say at her in-store clinic is that she has always tried to forge her own path, rather than do what everyone else has been doing. She started out thinking she wanted to be an orchestral performer but quickly realized that that particular path wasn’t for her, so she immediately started thinking of ways that she could explore new musical territories, whether it be through learning unique world flute instruments, selling ice cream, or being the first

Steps to Mastery: The Masterclass

Have you ever participated in a masterclass before? Or does the idea leave you trembling in your boots? The idea can certainly be intimidating, particularly if you have never seen a well-executed masterclass yourself. They can be incredibly powerful, though, and both performer and audience usually walk away with an immense amount of new knowledge. A master class is a concentrated public coaching for the musicians who participate. That is the intimidating part to most people–it’s one thing to receive constructive criticism behind closed doors in a private lesson, but quite another in front of an audience! You’ll definitely benefit from playing in master classes if you’re the kind of person who performs well under pressure. Because each turn is much shorter than an actual lesson or coaching and because the master must explain everything to an audience that may know little about their instrument, they’ll focus on only one or two very specific aspects of each performance. That way, everyone learns: the performer receives a valuable nugget of information that they can later apply to the rest of their repertoire, and the audience experiences how the master’s advice improved their performance. There’s incredible leverage and support created by the

NFA recap!

Wow, what a whirlwind week it’s been! I attended the annual National Flute Association convention in San Diego last Wednesday through Sunday–I am so thankful to have these opportunities! Conventions are always a great time to meet face-to-face with the vendors who provide me with the awesome instruments that I get to sell–most of the time I just interact with them through email and the occasional phone call. I also get to see world-class performances and attend meetings and workshops that leave me feeling invigorated and excited for things to come! Project Trio, naturally, was one of the highlights for me. The infectious energy that these guys exude is so amazing, and I got to be a part of a teacher workshop where they shared some of their techniques for working with students of all ages. One of my favorite parts of this job here at the flute shop is that even though I’m not working directly in a school, I still get to be a teacher! I also got to see fantastic performances by the San Diego Symphony flute section and several other fantastic musicians. So now it’s your turn…what new, up-and-coming things do you want to here here
