What is your most memorable musical experience:
My most memorable musical experience came in January of 1985 while in college. The Millikin Jazz Lab Band had just returned from a 10 day performance trip to Aruba, an island just off the coast of Venezuela. Our first gig, after the trip, was at Lock, Stock and Barrel, a local watering hole next to campus. The two hour gig was the most “locked in performance” we ever experienced. Each tune had it’s own special groove. Each section was on fire! The ensemble roared with power, danced with finesse and man, did we swing that day….still gives me chills. The soloists that day, nailed all the changes and even added some musical humor in a solo or two! (When a soloist works in “I wish I were and Oscar Meyer Weiner, cause that is what I’d truly like to be,” you know its a good gig!) We all knew it was a special day and one that we would try to replicate over and over. At the end of the gig, I recall looking around at the other members of the band, and saying, “What just happened? That was awesome! Let’s do that again!” To this day, that gig is my most memorable musical experience.

What is your most memorable musical experience:
My senior year at UE, I had the opportunity to go to the NAMM Show (Nation Association of Music Merchants). I went with Brandon Vukovic, and our Academic Director, Dr. Tim Zifer. While there, I learned more about the music industry and how far and wide the music industry reaches. While we were there we went to the beach, to Downtown Disney, and bowling. It was a fun trip. It is one of my favorite memories of college and I am so glad to have had opportunity to attend the NAMM Show. While this is not a musical experience, it stands out because it opened my eyes to the music business profession.

My parents were such a support system for me when I was growing up. My dad loved music and would sit for hours listening to me practice my saxophone. When I was in the 8th grade, he took me to Mel Owen Music in Louisville and bought me the Selmer Mark 7 saxophone that I still play on today. He never missed a concert of mine. Even once I started teaching, he would go with me to band contests. He is the reason I am where I am today.
