Private Teacher: Katie McDermitt

Katie McDermitt is an accomplished flute instructor and performer. Katie earned her degree in Flute Performance from the Jordan College of the Arts at Butler University, where she also double majored in Spanish. She received her primary instruction from Karen Moratz, principal flutist of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Currently, Katie is the second flutist with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis, and second flutist of the Fishers Chamber Orchestra. She also appears with the Fishers Wind Symphony and the Indiana Wind Symphony. She also enjoys playing freelance gigs around Indianapolis and the surrounding areas.

Katie has had extensive private teaching experience. Her students have placed high in solo and ensemble competitions. It is a pride to work with each individual student’s learning needs to help them succeed. In 2011, Katie was able to study abroad in Venezuela, where she was able to observe and participate in the widespread Venezuelan movement of “El Sistema”, a music education program directed at helping low income students to learn music, and through that, provide a support system and motivation to constantly strive to attain their goals. It is that system that fuels her passion for teaching, inspired by instructing and playing alongside those students. Katie believes that the study of music is effective in providing skills to achieve in all aspects of life, and is dedicated to helping each student grow to their potential.
